SSML mode on — the <speak> wrapper is added automatically, just use tags inline.

Pause: <break time="1s"/>  —  insert anywhere, e.g. Thank you.<break time="2s"/>Please hold.
Values can be milliseconds ("500ms") or seconds ("1s", "2.5s").

Other useful tags:
<prosody rate="slow" volume="loud">word</prosody> — stress a word (louder + slower)
<say-as interpret-as="characters">IT</say-as> — spell out acronyms letter by letter
<say-as interpret-as="telephone">555-1234</say-as> — read as phone number
